Billions of people wake up and go to work every day, but how many truly love what they do and leave every day feeling fulfilled? Unfortunately, not many. When you work in senior living, fulfillment is inevitable. Working in senior living means positively impacting others every day. Whether you are providing residents with companionship, medical attention, food, or other services, you are making a difference and putting smiles on their faces.
Working in senior living provides employees with experiences that are unbeknownst to other fields. Many staff find themselves developing meaningful connections with residents and patients. Providing companionship and engaging in conversations daily results in lasting friendships. Residents become your family, and vice versa. You can also learn quite a bit from spending time with seniors due to their life experiences and stories often told. Not only do you develop connections with residents, but with their families as well. It can be unnerving to move a family member into senior living, so family members often rely on employees to provide peace of mind during this sometimes-difficult transition.
Compassionate Caregivers
LECOM Health Engagement Officer Melanie Titzel, Ph.D., has spent thirty-five years working in senior living. Her various roles over the years have provided her with many rewarding experiences. “Reflecting on my thirty-five years of service in senior living, the most rewarding aspect has been watching thousands of elders move into our communities and refire their lives,” says Titzel. “Making new friends, developing new interests, taking part in life-long learning opportunities, and having easy access to healthy living programs have all given and continue to give our residents not only a new lease on an apartment but a new lease on life.” Titzel says the residents are inspirational to many staff members, herself included, as they continuously prove life has endless possibilities to offer regardless of age.
If you consider yourself to be compassionate and caring, you may be a good fit for a career in senior living. With plenty of job opportunities currently available within the LECOM Institute for Successful Aging, now is the perfect time to consider this career path. When people think about working in senior living, they typically think about physically taking care of residents: bathing them, changing them, giving them their medication, etc. However, there is a great deal of variety in the field. So, if directly taking care of residents isn’t for you, you can take care of them in other ways. There is an array of positions available, ranging from Home Health RN Case Managers to Shuttle Van Drivers. We are sure to have an open position that suits your unique skill set.
